The music of James Revels is inventive, cinematic, glitchy, poppy, and dreamy all at once. The tracks on his latest compilation, Sketch Book 4, alternate between frenetic and meditative tones, and there’s a distinctly koto-esque flavor to his arrangements. I wouldn’t be surprised to hear any of them on soundtracks to anime films or in video games. There’s also something jazzy about the tracks, and Revels reveals himself throughout the proceedings to be as adept at toying with dynamics as he is with melodies and arrangements. Give the album a listen, and you’re sure to be transported.
